Learn the basics and make a throw size quilt!Cost:
$300.00 per personAbout this experience
Want to get quilting but feeling too intimidated? This is the place for you! This adult class (15+) is a great time to meet people, get sewing and get creative.
Over the course of 12 hours, you will learn the fundamentals of quilting that will launch you on your adventure- but watch out! It's a rare person who just makes one quilt, you may find yourself hooked on quilting!
We will be working on a simple design using squares to encourage accuracy and a complete quilt in 12 short hours, with (hopefully) no need for homework.
Here is a breakdown of the course- please read the whole description, registration is acknowledgement of our terms)
Prerequisites: Fundamentals or equivalent experience. In order to ensure success for our classes, we scaffold knowledge, so it is assumed that students in this class are confident at threading the machine and basic use, as well as able to sew a straight line (quilting is one of those things that *really needs straight lines!). If you're not quite ready, please take Fundamentals first, and know this class will come around again.
Week 1:
- Colours, Fabric choices
- Using rotary cutter and cutting accurately
- Playing with layout- what works and why?
Week 2: Making the quilt top- working in sections to keep things lined up and organized
Week 3: Quilting and binding- we will keep the quilting quite simple for your first one!
Materials YOU are responsible for: You can bring from your collection, or source from us. We will talk about colours/patterns/quality in your first day, but we also want to cut so you WILL need fabric at our first class (but can buy it at the first class if needed.)
- Minimum of 3m total of quilting cotton, in at least two colours, preferably 6 or more colours/prints (if you are feeling overwhelmed, just use two fabrics)
- Ex: 6 different fabrics, 0.5m each
- Or: 12 fat quarters
- Or: 2 fabrics, 1.5m each (this will create a checkerboard effect)
- 3m of quilting cotton for backing (all one fabric)
- 0.5m of quilting cotton for binding (all one fabric)
- neutral thread (cream, gray etc)
Materials included: Batting, scraps to trial.
Tools (optional): You can bring your machine if you'd like to learn your own settings, or use ours. A 1/4" foot is nice to have for piecing and walking foot is essential for the quilting (our machines have these.). If you want to bring rotary cutters, mats or your own tools, please label them so we know who they belong to! We have a fully stocked tools selection so there's no need to bring things or buy new tools.
After 12 busy hours of sewing, you'll have a cozy lap quilt to rest up under!
*Also note: This truly is a learning journey, with a teacher guiding each of you towards your sewing goals. It's a small group class, and people work at their own pace. Students who prefer to take a little more time, or who miss a class may need to work on homework between classes, or book in for Open Sew time. We have Supported Open Sew on a regular schedule, as well as non-instructional Sewcials and Your Studio time that can be booked if you don't have a sewing machine at home. We do our best to encourage and support you in finishing your project, but make no guarantee of completion if students miss classes or need extra time. We are all individuals in learning style!
Because of the nature and small size of our classes, we are happy to switch you to another session or offer a refund with a minimum of two weeks notice.
Within 14 days of your starting class, we are happy to transfer your seat to a friend, but there are no refunds available- FINAL SALE. No shows are not eligible for refunds.
If you are a shift worker (or partnered with one, affecting your ability to plan) or have irregular ability to plan for other reasons, saving your registration for when you are certain about your availability reduces the stress for everyone- and if a class sells out before you get in, reach out to be added to a waitlist or to see if we can squeeze you in. We can often accommodate a last minute extra person, especially if you've been in touch in advance.
