For the Sake of Sashiko

For the Sake of Sashiko

Wednesdays, June 5 & 12 5:30-7:30pm

Join us for an exploration of the history, the uses and the joy of Sashiko Stitching. Equal parts hands on and interesting discussion, you will not only learn HOW to stitch, but why this ancient technique remains as relevant as ever.

Week one will be a basic introduction the the skills you’ll need to produce lovely basic sashiko stitches on linen and denim. You can try out various styles of stencil, as well as marking tools. You will bring home your tools and materials to work on over the week. We will work on getting even and straight running stitch.

Week two will be continuing the basics, but adding a curved motif and you will be invited to bring a garment requiring mending-we will teach you about trouble shooting a variety of mending techniques, as each issue is a unique puzzle to be solved by the mender.

As an introductory class, we will be focussing on two basic stitches, so that you can really get a sense of the technique. We have resources in our library to peruse before class, and books & tools available for purchase for your at home pursuit of sashiko excellence!

A take-home kit will be provided with Sashiko needles and thread, regular embroidery thread and a variety of fabric samples to try out various techniques.
