Add a little FLAIR to your wardrobe!

Further fundaments of sewing skills!

About this experience

Apparently skinny jeans have done their time in the current fashion loop, so let’s modify what we have in our closet and full circle back to a wide leg/ flare style!

During this session we will revamp a pair of skinny/straight jeans by adding inserts to widen the legs, and if you are wanting some extra fun flair you can add some applique details to the jeans as well! You can also use this class to add flair to a skirt, dress, sleeve or top!

Sewing patches onto a leg can be a tricky ordeal, but because we are splitting the seams to add inserts it is a great opportunity to pull more details onto the pants to balance the contrast fabric.

In this class Paloma will not only help you with the technical “how to create inserts” (also called Godets), she will also assist in guiding you through the creative process of mixing and matching fabrics and patch placement to create a cohesive and stylish design. A Godet/Triangle insert is a great way to make a straight skirt into a twirly delight!

Bring: a pair of skinny jeans (or other garments) that you no longer wear and fabric for inserts and patches. Insert fabric should be a woven material that is not too thick (think quilting cotton, lace or flannel)… a fun vintage sheet or curtain from the thrift could be perfect). To balance the leg we will be adding inserts on the inside and outside seam, so there needs to be 4 panels in total, measuring at least the length from hem to mid thigh x 6” width (so 24” width in total). Please note that the grain line needs to be the longer measurement for the fabric to hang correctly and insert size will vary depending on how flaired or wide you want your jeans.

Prerequisites: Students should have reasonable comfort with sewing machines and working with fabric. If you need a refresher to make sure you are ready, join a Get to Know the Sewing Machine, Foundations or Fundamentals.
