This four week adult Learn to Crochet class will get you started on your next fun hobby! This class can be taken multiple times (similar to our Sew Your Own), as there will be some content the same each time and LOTS of freedom and creativity to try new projects!
A combination of structure and openness will allow you to get your basic skills and start working on a project you feel passionate about.
Prerequisites: None! This class is great for absolute beginners, and people who've been exploring and are looking for more refined techniques or to add new challenging projects to their repertoire!
Materials: Nothing for the first class, options will be discussed for week 3. Cost will be dependent on your project choice.
General Outline:
Week 1:
- Terminology and learning about materials and tools.
- Basic crochet stitches: Single, double, circular, changing colours
- Reading simple crochet patterns
- Making samples and understanding techniques
- *materials are included for the first two classes
- Students with experience may bring projects they've already started to work on to get support and further their learning!
Week 2:
- Further practice on basics/review
- Granny Squares! (students who've completed one session may skip this and be working on their independent project)
- Choosing your independent project, understanding skill level, time commitment and how to choose the right material for your project
Week 3 & 4:
- Bring your projects in and get support as you build them up.
Students who are able to work on projects at home will find the greatest success in this class. Crochet is repetitive and meditative, requiring focus as you learn, and time put in will pay you back in a lifelong relaxing hobby! You will not finish a project solely in class time, unless you choose the smallest and easiest project- like a dish cloth!
Potential projects may be a toque, granny squares made into a scarf, tote bag, tea cozy; maybe you'll start a vest or sweater!
*Also note: This truly is a learning journey, with a teacher guiding each of you towards your sewing goals. It's a small group class, and people work at their own pace. Students who prefer to take a little more time, or who miss a class may need to work on homework between classes, or book in for Open Sew time. We have Supported Open Sew on a regular schedule, as well as non-instructional Sewcials and Your Studio time that can be booked if you don't have a sewing machine at home. We do our best to encourage and support you in finishing your project, but make no guarantee of completion if students miss classes or need extra time. We are all individuals in learning style!
Because of the nature and small size of our classes, we are happy to switch you to another session or offer a refund with a minimum of two weeks notice.
Within 14 days of your starting class, we are happy to transfer your seat to a friend, but there are no refunds available- FINAL SALE. No shows are not eligible for refunds.
If you are a shift worker (or partnered with one, affecting your ability to plan) or have irregular ability to plan for other reasons, saving your registration for when you are certain about your availability reduces the stress for everyone- and if a class sells out before you get in, reach out to be added to a waitlist or to see if we can squeeze you in. We can often accommodate a last minute extra person, especially if you've been in touch in advance.
