Intro to Quilt-Summer Intensive!

Learn all the skills you need to get quilting in this Lap-Quilt class!

About this experience

Introduction to quilting! A great next step after Fundamentals, or in switching from Garment making to quilting!

Complete a baby-sized to lap-sized quilt start to finish over the course of three days. You will learn cutting using a rotary cutter and mat, piecing an accurate 1/4" seam, basting, quilting, and binding.

You will need to bring to class:

  • Sewing machine in good working order (or use the Spool's Machines if you prefer!) with a fresh Universal size 90 needle

  • Minimum of 3m total of quilting cotton, in at least two colours, preferably 6 or more colours/prints

    • Ex: 6 different fabrics, 0.5m each

    • Or: 12 fat quarters

    • Or: 2 fabrics, 1.5m each (this will create a checkerboard effect)

  • 3m of quilting cotton for backing (all one fabric)

  • 0.5m of quilting cotton for binding (all one fabric)

  • Minimum 60x80" piece of batting

  • Neutral cotton thread for piecing (I often do grey for cool colours or beige for warmer colours)

  • Complimentary colour thread for quilting and topstitching

  • 1/4" piecing foot (Spool Machines have these)

  • Walking foot (Spool Machines have these)

  • 6x24" (or 6.5x24.5") ruler- IF you already own this! The Spool has several ready to use.

Bizz McKilligan has been quilting for over a decade, originally drawn to the craft as a way to use up fabric scraps and reduce waste. What began as a sustainable hobby quickly evolved into a passion—not just for quilting, but for the sewing machines that make it all possible. That turning point led Bizz to pursue a career in sewing machine service, combining technical skill with creative purpose. For Bizz, sewing is both a practical tool and a powerful art form. She is deeply committed to sharing her knowledge, and loves helping others grow their skills and confidence through education and support.
