Learn to Sew this humble yet noble wardrobe staple!Cost:
$120.00 per personAbout this experience
Raise up the humble tshirt to its’ rightful place as a core wardrobe staple, and honour the work that goes into its’ production by learning to make your own. With only a simple domestic sewing machine, you can make a shirt that will last years.
Patterns & Fabrics are not included in the class fee.
We carry a curated selection of patterns and fabrics to choose from and you can see a list of suggestions below.
This 6 hour class is broken into logical chunks, and you'll see just how fast it can be to make your own clothes once you learn the basics and the trouble shooting. Your first Tshirt may take 6 hours, but in no time you'll be making them for yourself in an hour or two!
-sewists who like to take a little extra time may need to complete homework between classes to ensure completion!
-Prerequisite: some knowledge of the sewing machine; Get To Know the Sewing Machine or Foundations are good starting points. If you sign up without knowledge of threading the machines, I will just thread them for you with a quick demo, as we won't have time to go in depth in other topics!
You may just never want to buy a t-shirt again!
Skills Developed:
- Understanding Size Charts, Measurements and blending/adjusting sizes
- Fabric Choices and how to cut fabric (students who opt to buy fabric elsewhere should have it-prewashed- at the first class, or be ready to cut it out at home before the second class!
- Options for construction stitches, manipulating knit fabric and machine settings
- Finishing/hemming, sewing sleeves and neckbands
As always, the class will be a wealth of tips and joyful learning!
Patterns we love (some we carry in store, some are available as PDF). Check out the size charts to see that they'll fit! These patterns have all been well tested by myself and students. If you'd like to use a different pattern, please email me in advance to check! Some people have been disappointed by bringing patterns that won't work for their bodies, their fabric, or the context of the class.
Woodley Tee This is almost always in store and comes in Women's and Mens
Lark Tee Usually in stock in store, even if it says it's out of stock (I hoard them for classes)
Jackson Tee (PDF by local designer)
Plus Size Patterns:
Galen T-Shirt A boxy over-sized tee with style
Tarlee Tshirt Fitted Tee/Turtleneck option.
If you are unsure about which pattern to get, send me an email or come by before class to get some tips!
We love Sure Copy for our PDF pattern printing needs- just email them at info@surecourtenay.ca
Fabrics:
Our favourite for beginners is our Tencel French terry- stable enough to sew easily, but so soft and luxurious to wear. Please don't buy anything too thin or drapey, you won't enjoy sewing it! Again- if in doubt- come in ahead of the class!
Also note: This truly is a learning journey, with a teacher guiding each of you towards your sewing goals. It's a small group class, and people work at their own pace. Students who prefer to take a little more time, or who miss a class may need to work on homework between classes, or book in for Open Sew time. We have Supported Open Sew on a regular schedule, as well as non-instructional Sewcials and Your Studio time that can be booked if you don't have a sewing machine at home. We do our best to encourage and support you in finishing your project, but make no guarantee of completion if students miss classes or need extra time. We cannot guarantee available make up classes. We are all individuals in learning style!
Because of the nature and small size of our classes, we are happy to switch you to another session or offer a refund with a minimum of two weeks notice.
Within 14 days of your starting class, we are happy to transfer your seat to a friend, but there are no refunds available- FINAL SALE. No shows are not eligible for refunds.
If you are a shift worker (or partnered with one, affecting your ability to plan) or have irregular ability to plan for other reasons, saving your registration for when you are certain about your availability reduces the stress for everyone- and if a class sells out before you get in, reach out to be added to a waitlist or to see if we can squeeze you in. We can often accommodate a last minute extra person, especially if you've been in touch in advance.
